Sound of Music Festival is thrilled to receive the 2017 FEO (Festivals and Events Ontario) Achievement Award for Best Greening of a Festival. The award honours best practices in the efforts made by a festival or event to ensure earth-friendly policies are carried out throughout planning, implementation and evaluation. The Festival has also been designated a Festival of Distinction by FEO, a group representing some of the best celebrations in the province and which draw a wide audience.
The Sound of Music Eco Team is responsible for hand sorting every single bag of the 15.4 tonnes of waste generated at the Festival. Last year, their efforts kept 91% of waste out of the landfill by diverting it to compost and recycling. The Festival also offers transportation alternatives with its bike corral and shuttle service and onsite water refilling stations to curb disposable water bottle use.
Sound of Music Festival is recruiting for the Eco Team and volunteers in all areas. With over 1000 volunteers needed in 12 different areas, there is sure to be something for everyone. Check soundofmusic.ca/volunteers for area descriptions, information guides and to register for a shift. Still have questions? Come to the Volunteer Open House on April 22 from 2 pm to 4 pm at The Halton HiVE, 901 Guelph Line in Burlington.
